      Abbas' remarks, for which he could have been indicted in Germany, have long been part of the rhetoric of the progressive left, whereby there is a "holocaust" taking place in Gaza. A telling example of the way in which many Germans and especially German officialdom deal with the Holocaust was the August 2020 visit to Berlin of Mahmoud Abbas, the de facto leader of the Palestinian Authority. A 2020 survey conducted by the German state TV channel ZDF laid bare the sentiment toward Holocaust remembrance in Germany: More than a quarter of the people asked said they wished Germany would "finally stop going on about the Holocaust.".
