- Abstract: The book "Germany. Geschichte einer Nation" by Helmut Walser Smith is a classic national history that questions the view of the German nation as an "invented tradition". Smith argues that the idea of the German nation is older and has evolved from a peaceful to an aggressive ideology of nationalism. The author examines the "invention" of the German nation around 1500 and the spread of nationalism from the Congress of Vienna to World War I. Criticism is directed at Smith for not considering the ambivalence of nationalism and for writing the history of national ideas in Germany in terms of good and evil. [Extracted from the article]
- Abstract: Das Buch "Deutschland.
