- Abstract: Contemporary historical research today must be "transnational". Actually, since 2001 transnational approaches have helped to overcome methodological nationalism and to generate new knowledge of transnational actors, ideas and cultures as well as transnational spaces. But how new is transnational historiography really? "Because they are unfamiliar with earlier works, scholars born later make discoveries that turn out to be rediscoveries", said Robert K. Merton in 1967. At least for the revolution of 1848 it can be shown that Veit Valentin already in 1930/31 productively took transnational perspectives into account avant la lettre. Admittedly, the democratic historian had other priorities in the vulnerable Weimar Republic. For that reason he claimed that the unloved revolution had been "supranational-European" but through imitation, transfer and adaptation of other models also German, while the counter-revolutionaries had formed the "first international". Valentin is dutifully referred to as a "classic" in the historiography of the revolution, but his voluminous two-volume work is apparently hardly studied in depth. In fact, it contains an astonishing number of transnational insights into the constitutional and cultural history of the German-European Revolution. Yet, some recent studies unaware of these predecessors still proclaim transnationality as something new. It is a revenant in the guise of a new discovery. But there are also differences to 1930/31. - Abstract: Zeitgemäße Geschichtsforschung muss heute „transnational" sein. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
