    • Abstract:
This article is based on a lecture given to the Academic and Directing Staffs at the Joint Services Command and Staff College as part of a Military Education Forum held on 15 October 2003 at the JSCSC. It examines education and in particular the pedagogy of modern military education within the context of the modern-postmodern debate. Dividing educational philosophies between the modern rational-scientific approach with its focus on reason and the acquisition of knowledge, and a postmodern methodology which emphasizes wisdom, obtained through a more humanist, holistic and moral approach, the author argues that only the latter form of education will equip modern leaders with the wideranging skills and flexibility of mind they will require to deal with the complex security concerns of the post 9/11 world.
