Marital Satisfaction and Family Environment during the COVID-19 Pandemic. (English)
    • Abstract:
Objectives. The implemented qualitative research was focused on the analysis of changes in family functioning and marital satisfaction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sample and settings. The research group consisted of 8 married couples (N = 16) with the average age of 34.63 years (SD = 3.78). They were married for at least 5 years (M = 9.25; SD = 1.91), during which they lived in the same household, had at least 1 child (M = 2; SD = 1.31) and were not divorced. The data were obtained via a semi-structured interview. Research questions. How do the respondents characterize family functioning and marital satisfaction before and during the COVID-19 pandemic? Statistical analysis. The obtained data were analysed using the method of consensual qualitative research. Results. Family functioning has been affected mainly by the closing of schools and the reduction of social contacts. The possibility of spending time together among family members, new family rituals and the reassessment of the importance of family and health were considered to be favourable consequences of the pandemic. The prevailing negative emotional experiences, the increase in parental responsibilities and the unfavourable behaviour and experiences of children were identified as a negative benefit of the pandemic. Most of the respondents did not report a decline in marital satisfaction during the pandemic, although they noted a limited time with their partner. Limitations. The research was conducted in an impersonal online environment, some of the questions were of a retrospective character and the research sample was not homogeneous in all aspects of family functioning. The overcoming of COVID-19 by the interviewees or the death of a close person on COVID-19 was not monitored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
