      Starting from an unusual, but equally rich in meanings, episode of musical censorship occurred in the scenario of American popular music, this article seeks to reflect on the internalist and externalist conditions that operated in this boycotting process. Considered as a watershed in the rock scene, Rumble was an archetypal music work in terms of the construction of its symbolic meaning. Using some conceptual tools from music and from anthropology, we suggest possibilities for answering the following question: why did an instrumental piece of music manage to operate such significant musical and social reactivity? The reflections here presented take into consideration the social functions of music and are based on the structural aspects of music, as well as on the symbolic meanings of this phenomenon.       A partir do inusitado (e rico em significados) episódio de censura musical ocorrido no cenário da música popular estadunidense, este artigo busca refletir sobre as condicionantes internalistas e externalistas que operaram nesse processo. Considerada como divisora de águas no cenário do rock, Rumble foi uma obra arquetípica no que se refere à construção da significação simbólica. Valendo-se de ferramentas conceituais musicológicas e antropológicas, aventamos possibilidades de resposta para a questão: por que um tema instrumental conseguiu operar tal significativa reatividade musical e social? As reflexões aqui apresentadas levam em consideração as funções da música nas sociedades, os aspectos estruturais da música, bem como as representações e significados simbólicos desse fenômeno.
