      This article presents a study about the Algarve Intermunicipal Libraries Network (BIBAL). Beyond the introduction, and to clarify the working framework of the regional libraries, a brief overview of the creation process and developments between 1991 and 2009 is presented. Three phases of cooperation practices between the member libraries stand out and originated the formalization of the network - the signing of a cooperation agreement by the Algarve Intercounty Community/AMAL, the University of Algarve (UAlg) and the General Directorate of the Book, Archives and Libraries (DGLAB). Wrapping up, relevant statistical indicators are presented based on those annually collected by DGLAB from regional RNBP's (National Network of Public Libraries) to characterize users, human resources and public services offered.       Este artigo apresenta o estudo feito sobre a Rede Intermunicipal das Bibliotecas do Algarve (BIBAL). Para além da introdução, para enquadramento das bibliotecas na região do Algarve, refere-se à sua criação, ou à sua renovação, que ocorreu entre 1991 e 2009. Assinalam-se as três fases de práticas de cooperação entre as bibliotecas, que culminaram na formalização da rede, através de um Acordo de cooperação subscrito pela Comunidade Intermunicipal do Algarve/AMAL, pela Universidade do Algarve (UAlg) e pela Direção-Geral do Livro, dos Arquivos e das Bibliotecas (DGLAB). Em seguida, com base nos indicadores estatísticos recolhidos anualmente pela DGLAB, apresentam-se os dados do Algarve que se consideram mais relevantes, para a caracterização dos utilizadores, dos recursos e dos serviços prestados à população.
