- Alternate Title:
The influence of task repetition on performance rate. (English)
- Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of repeating a cognitively less demanding and highly structured task on speech and articulation rate. Speech rate as a temporal speech variable indirectly points to the degree of the speakers’ control over their linguistic knowledge as well as the overall efficiency and automation of all mechanisms involved in speech production. The study included 33 participants with high grades on the English language test at the higher level of the state matura. The chosen task included story formation based on visual images and the repetition of the same story to the listener. The temporal variables included in the study were measured in the speech analysis program Praat. The results indicate that only the speech rate is significantly higher in the repeated task. The results can be explained by the reduced requirements at the conceptualization level and by the existence of strong links among all levels of speech production, which have a high degree of activation due to the first performance of the speech task. It follows that, regardless of the good state matura results and the fact that the task is cognitively less demanding and highly structured, task repetition is a beneficial activity influencing the automation of the speech production mechanisms as well as the speech rate. - Abstract:
