      The proposed reflection is based on a set of assumptions, articulating the concepts of History, Social Memory and Memory Institutions, among which the archives are included. In the current 'present society', a set of questions have emerged in the public debate which require a critical reflection on the social uses of the past and a special attention to the role of History and Archivistics. It is in this cultural environment, and in the context of the development of information technologies, that we will try to identify some of the most immediate challenges that face the archives, as "memory institutions", in the announced "knowledge society".       A reflexão proposta parte de um conjunto de pressupostos, articulando os conceitos de História, de Memória Social e de Instituições de Memória, entre as quais se inscrevem os arquivos. Na atual "sociedade do presente" várias questões têm emergido no presente, as quais obrigam a uma reflexão crítica sobre os usos sociais do passado e uma especial atenção ao papel da História e da Arquivística. É neste ambiente cultural, e no contexto do desenvolvimento das tecnologias da informação, que procuraremos identificar alguns dos desafios mais imediatos que se colocam aos arquivos, enquanto "instituições de memória", na anunciada "sociedade do conhecimento".
