Diachronic study of attitudes towards the portuguese language in literature (1860-1930) in Spain and Uruguay. (English)

The study of linguistic attitudes is a tool of extraordinary value when it comes to understand the concepts that a certain language provokes in the listeners, in most cases based on stereotypes common to an entire community. In our study, we considered that the attitudes towards the Portuguese language in two geographically distant nations, Spain and Uruguay, but both speakers of the same language, could provide interesting insights into the perception that Portuguese exported to neighbouring nations. We limited our study between 1860 and 1930, because they were decades in which both nations suffered huge changes in the political and social levels, but even more radical in the intellectual and literary levels. Accordingly, we analysed literary works, newspaper articles and essays by Spanish and Uruguayan writers, as we consider that literature is a vehicle for the transmission of different peoples' identities. El estudio de las actitudes lingüísticas es una herramienta de extraordinario valor a la hora de entender los conceptos que una determinada lengua provoca en los hablantes que la escuchan, en la mayoría de los casos basados en estereotipos comunes a toda una comunidad. En nuestro estudio, hemos considerado que las actitudes hacia la lengua portuguesa en dos naciones distantes geográficamente, España y Uruguay, pero ambas hablantes de la misma lengua, podría aportar interesantes revelaciones acerca de la percepción que el portugués exportaba a las naciones vecinas. Hemos acotado nuestro estudio entre los años 1860 y 1930, ya que fueron décadas en las que ambas naciones sufrieron enormes cambios a nivel político y social, pero aún más radicales en el campo intelectual y literario, por lo que hemos analizado obras literarias, artículos periodísticos y ensayos de escritores españoles y uruguayos, una vez que consideramos que la literatura es un vehículo de transmisión de las diferentes identidades de los pueblos.
