    • Abstract:
The article examines the 19th-century origins of American neurology, when the struggle for the professionalization of mental health was also a struggle over how to explain "spiritualism" and when the gendering and racializing of the paranoid reading of religion was established. It looks at claims within the contemporary cognitive science of religion to have identified a device, named HADD, that triggers religious pathology.
