The article notes that 246 substances are known or "reasonably anticipated" to be human carcinogens in the latest U.S. government compilation. Seventeen cancer-causing agents are new to the list, including, for the first time, viruses. The new list includes cobalt sulfate, Hepatitis B and C viruses, human papillomaviruses, lead and lead compounds. Among the repeat offenders are alcohol in excess, asbestos, radon, ultraviolet radiation and wood dust.
