- Abstract: The present essay investigates the European reception of D. Merezhkovsky’s L. Tolstoy and Dostoevsky through the example of Thomas Mann’s Goethe and Tolstoy. In this book published in 1925, Mann elaborates a strong parallel between Goethe and Tolstoy, which seems at first sight to draw him far away from Merezhkovsky. Eventually though, not only does Mann’s text demonstrate that its author is putting into practice the lessons of the Russian critic, but in general the whole reception of Merezhkovsky’s book fosters a better comprehension of the new and original way in which Merezhkovsky builds his own comparison.
