    • Abstract:
The peak of the volunteer movement was in 2014-2015 when the Ukrainian state was weak; from 2016 the Ukrainian state began to supply the needs of Ukraine's army and the volunteer movement tapered off. It provides primary documentation for how Ukraine's volunteerism is deeply rooted in its national identity, history of opposition to Soviet rule and post-Soviet popular uprisings in the Orange and Euromaidan Revolutions against authoritarian regimes. This book shows how Ukraine's volunteerism distinguishes the country from Russia, where an authoritarian state has destroyed all forms of activity independent of the state and civil society groups.
