The article discusses research on the perspectives of patients in Australia on risk factors for lower extremity amputations (LEA) resulting from type 2 diabetes mellitus. Findings indicate competing priorities such as finances and family care, as well as awareness, poor understanding of their condition and purpose of treatment and further complications as factors that influence the ability of a patient to manage risk of or prevent LEA.
