The article aims to present literate reaction to literature by analysing censorship reports produced at the Sacred Congregation of the Index, at the Vatican, and to the royalty, in Portugal and France, at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th. The documentation shows that these institutions were much more than places to condemn and ban books. One can realize that those men didn't react to book the same way even though they were all censors, scholars and Catholics. The article takes into consideration the different ways of reading, its relationship with the qualification of readers and with the reading conditions. The material preserved by the censorship organizations also exhibits an early appreciation of literary writings and a strong concern with the formal quality of the texts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

O propósito deste texto é apresentar algumas das formas pelas quais letrados reagiram a obras de literatura, a partir do exame de pareceres elaborados por censores ligados à Sagrada Congregação do Índice, no Vaticano, e ao poder real, em Portugal e na França, entre o final do século XVIII e o início do XIX. A documentação evidencia que esses organismos eram muito mais do que máquinas de condenar e proibir livros. A análise dos pareceres revela que o fato de serem todos censores, letrados e católicos não produziu leituras uniformes, o que permite refletir sobre os diferentes modos de ler, sua relação com a formação dos leitores e com as condições de produção da leitura. O material conservado pelos organismos de censura apresenta também uma precoce valorização dos escritos literários e uma marcante preocupação com a qualidade formal dos textos.
