    • Abstract:
This article reports that Alicia Markova, one of the greatest British ballerinas of the 20th century, died on December 2 at the age of 94. Billed as "The Miniature Pavlova" in her youth, Markova became the youngest member of Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1924. She made her American debut with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1938, portraying Giselle, the role that became her signature. She later performed as a star of Ballet Theatre, the precursor to American Ballet Theatre. In 1945, she formed the Markova-Dolin Ballet with Anton Dolin. Markova retired from the stage in 1963, after which she directed the Metropolitan Opera Ballet for six years.
