- Abstract:
These are the opening beats of Mohsin Hamid's latest novel, The Last White Man: "One morning Anders, a white man, woke up to find he had turned a deep and undeniable brown." And a dark-from-the-start, nameless "cleaning guy" at the gym where Anders works declines Anders's belated offer to train him. Oona, "a realist" unnerved by this nativist zealotry, is inspired by Anders's transformation to paint herself with brown makeup. Anders feels guilty for his darkness; "just by being here, Anders was taking something from his father, taking his dignity.". [Extracted from the article]
