      When the endorphin Leu-enkephalin was conjugated with squalene and injected into rats, the nanoparticles delivered the treatment only into an inflamed area of tissue (red) and provided prolonged pain relief. Recently we have focused on the development of endorphin neuropeptides for alleviation of pain, where squalene nanoparticles specifically target inflammatory tissues (see figure above). Indeed, we found in cell studies,when compared to the free drug, doxorubicin-loaded nanoparticles were more toxic to multidrug-resistant hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines.
