A mulher e os rituais do casamento no interior de Santiago (Cabo Verde). (Portuguese)

The woman and the rituals of marriage in the countryside of Santiago (Cape Verde). (English)

This largely descriptive study focuses on marriage rituals held in the interior of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde, in the mid-19th century, in order to, first, understand how marriage, an intimate union between two people, could involve two families, neighbours or even two communities and, second, what were the steps taken since the young suitor's expression of interest in a girl to the actual marriage. The paper starts by contextualizing a traditional arranged wedding held in the interior of Santiago. Then, different stages of the process are analysed: the act of asking for the bride's hand, preparations for the day of the religious ceremony, a series of rituals carried out in bride's parents house leading to the wedding day, and the night before and after the consummation of the marriage. This bibliographical, documentary and field research based on semi-structured interviews aims to contribute to the description of a traditional marriage by collecting and analysing testimonies of well-known traditional culture figures and a number of respected community elders. The study concludes that nowadays, both courtship and marriage, are arranged and conducted in different ways and that the surrounding rituals have little or no relationship with the 19th century procedures described in the present work. Este estudo, marcadamente descritivo, foca os rituais do casamento no interior da ilha de Santiago, nos meados do século XIX, procurando compreender como é que o casamento, um ato íntimo entre duas pessoas, podia envolver duas famílias, os vizinhos ou até duas comunidades e quais as etapas percorridas desde a manifestação de interesse do jovem pretendente pela rapariga, até ao casamento. Assim, começa-se por fazer a contextualização de um casamento tradicional, arranjado e realizado, no interior de Santiago, passando pelas diferentes etapas, desde o pedido de noiva aos preparativos que antecedem o dia da cerimónia religiosa e uma série de rituais realizados na residência dos pais da noiva ao longo do dia do casamento, e à noite, antes e depois da consumação do matrimónio. Esta pesquisa bibliográfica, documental e de campo, baseada em entrevistas semiestruturadas, pretende contribuir para a descrição do casamento tradicional, recorrendo a testemunhos de figuras reconhecidas da cultura tradicional e de alguns anciãos respeitados na sua comunidade. Foi possível concluir que tanto o namoro como o casamento, nos dias que correm, são arranjados e realizados em moldes diversos e que os rituais envolventes pouco ou nenhuma relação têm com os eventos descritos no presente trabalho.
