      The article deals with the mythical bird phoenix which is believed to have lived for 500 years and has been born and reborn in many cultures. Topics include the ancient analogues of the bird in the fenghuang of the Chinese imperial court and the Egyptian benu according to Greek historian Herodotus' book "Histories," Herodotus' description of the bird, its appearance in the Judaic tradition in the Garden of Eden and on Noah's Ark, and Japanese artist Hokusai's inspiration for painting phoenix.
