    • Abstract:
I was happy to see that Gilbert included the work of Pulitzer Prize-winner Ann Telnaes and her caricatures of two presidents, George W. Bush and Donald Trump. Gilbert describes Flagg's caricature of Uncle Sam as ironic, deliberately grotesque, "more a comic travesty than a tragic call to arms", the illustration of a nation willing to enter a world conflict "in the name of a grumpy old man." As the author points out, Telnaes's caricatures about Bush and Trump reflect poorly on the American collective self and body politic. [Extracted from the article]
