    • Abstract:
The article focuses on two surprising findings in a major new report on the success of tree planting on closed landfill sites in the North-West, Great Britain undertaken for the Mersey Forest. The report finds that, despite concerns about inadequate soil cover and escaping gases, experimental monitoring is showing better-than-expected tree establishment. Importantly, the more fertile sites can be comparable to agricultural land in providing opportunities for economic, short-rotation coppice crops. More environmentally-stressed landfills are favouring higher biodiversity.
