    • Abstract:
The article presents information on the DuSable Museum of African American History in the United States. It is the largest and most renowned independent museum in the U.S. dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history and achievements of African Americans. Exhibitions at the DuSable museum are not tainted by institutional associations with nineteenth-century white colonialism. The DuSable was created out of African American desires to found an institution beholden to the black community and honoring the first permanent settler in Chicago, the Haitian fur trader Jean Baptist Pointe DuSable.
