      The article focuses on the implication of the belief of the New History of Capitalism (NHC) proponents that southern slaveholders are the architects of the capitalist system. The economists and historians who support NHC reportedly reject the idea that plantation slavery was a premodern or an anti-industrial trend. Harvard University professor Sven Beckert claims that slavery is the essence of U.S. capitalism. It cites the tendency of NHC books to misquote and misrepresent sources.
