    • Abstract:
The Dubrovnik Summer Festival is one of the oldest continuously operating cultural summer festivals that is still taking place. This paper seeks to contribute to the knowledge of the early period of the festivalisation of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival (1949–1959), which, to this day, has not been the subject of scientific research. The paper focuses on the first decade of the festival in which it rose from the local level to the position of the most important Yugoslav festival of international reputation. The festivalisation of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival is observed through the prism of the shaping of the organisational, programmatic, and conceptual framework of the festival and its media representation in festival publications and newspaper articles. The observed process will be contextualised with regard to the social and political context of Yugoslavia’s opening to the world, as well as the gradual easing of the regime’s repression after the severance of political relations with the Soviet Union in 1948. The paper contributes to the subdisciplines of anthropology of the festival and cultural history. Methodologically, it is founded on archive and newspaper material on the festival from the period of the 1950s. The paper is divided into three parts. In the first part, the festival’s activities will be contextualised with regard to social and historical circumstances; it then focuses on the research questions related to the organisational, programmatic, and conceptual development of the festival, while the last part deals with the media representation of the festival in the then Yugoslav newspapers. • Abstract:
