    • Subject Terms:
    • Abstract:
Corruption has now become endemic in society. Law enforcement agencies have been commonly viewed as one of the public entities most exposed to the risk of corruption. This review article discusses about causal factors of corruption and misappropriation within police departments in Southeast Asia. A scoping review of prior research was conducted to address purposes of the study. Seven online journal databases were searched for relevant articles published between January 1, 2018, and July 31, 2021. The initial search identified 2226 articles. Through an eligibility criteria screening and check, a total 19 articles were selected. Findings of the review identified 10 main causal factors of corruption in police departments, including rationalization, leadership, supervision, report, bureaucracy, training, external forces, opportunities, reward and accountability. This review has implications for police departments, anti-corruption agencies and policymakers to strengthen policy, corruption action plans and corruption control measures. Several important directions for future research are highlighted in this review, especially the design of studies to explore causality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
