Contributions to the appearance of sugar beet in Hungary. (English)
    • Abstract:
Sugar beet is one our most recent cultivated plants, but it is responsible for the largest energy value per hectare. Its primary importance was associated with general provisioning. Sugar beet made sugar available for large sections of society, thereby causing significant changes in dietary habits. It had a definitive role in the development of Hungarian agriculture in the 19th century. It had an indirect impact on the whole of the agricultural sector (crop rotation, artificial fertilizers, mechanization, animal breeding, fodder production), even on industrial development. Its role concerning honey and beekeeping is also unique. The appearance of sugar beet suggested the decreasing importance of beekeeping, but actually it led to a reevaluation of the role of honey. Sugar beet belongs to the few cultivated plants whose indirect influence is so versatile and profound that the direct results of its role can only be appreciated by taking into account all the above-mentioned factors.
