- Alternate Title: Constitutionalism in a "System of Co-existing States". Deliberations on an International History of Constitutions in the Revolutionary Age, 1776–1820. (English)
- Abstract: Constitutional history, the article suggests, should more strongly engage with questions of international order, foreign policy and international law. Using case studies from the age of the Atlantic Revolutions – the North American and French constitutions of the 1780s and 1790s, Napoleonic constitutionalism and the German Bundesakte of 1815/20 –, the article argues that constitution-making can hardly be understood without considering external influences. Following this line of reasoning, the articles develops two complementary perspectives for international constitutional history: On the one hand, constitutions should be more thoroughly questioned about their ideas and references to international relations and international law. On the other hand, aspects of external influences on constitution-making need be considered, for example the pressures of an occupying power or the expectations of international institutions.
