      The article examines the misconceptions about menstruation in the 19th-century despite advances in medical and scientific knowledge. Topics discussed include the role of belief about the need for rest during menstruation as hindrance to the higher education and professional advancement of women and girls, misconception about the effect of failure to rest on the physical and mental health of women, and efforts of women to refute such belief.
