The author analyzes the implications of a non-unified field of Black studies in relation to a 2015 symposium on Black studies at the University of California and the 2017 event "Scenes @ 20" at Rutgers University. Topics discussed include his efforts to make the students aware of racial health inequality in the symposium, and scandal in the historicization offered by the book "Scenes of Subjection: Terror, Slavery, and Self-Making in 19th-Century America" examined in the Rutgers event.
