    • Abstract:
The stream swirls upward and downward as water and dissolved chemicals move among the air, the stream channel, the underlying hyporheic zone, and the deeper groundwater. Snow and ice cover the small streams of the alpine zone for a significant portion of each year, which keeps the stream inhospitable for many organisms. The montane stream feeds all of these plants as the stream water seeps into the banks and creates moist soil. These strong cases protect the insect against the strength of the current and the (to a nymphal insect) boulders of sand grains that come tumbling with the current. [Extracted from the article]
