    • Abstract:
IN THE EARLY DAYS of the Covid-19crisis, there was a lot of talk that it representeda "test" for philanthropy. Ifnot exactly philanthropy's "shining moment", anassessment of its Covid response has been buoyedby a sense that things in the United States aregetting better and by an unspoken counterfactualthat suggests that without philanthropy's supportfor that system, things would likely have beenmuch worse. These are unlikely to be bridged in the monthsahead, as two postpandemic narratives solidify:the Covid response as success and the Covid responseas failure; Covid response as a resolutionof crisis or as a key element of the crisis itself.
