- Abstract:
(Science) PHOTO (COLOR): Fossilized leaves reveal that flowering plants, like this one from the willow family (Salicaceae), flourished in South America after a mass extinction event. The team examined more than 50,000 microscopic pollen fossils and 6,000 leaf fossils and compared them with those in the Smithsonian's reference collection. Late Cretaceous rainforests were also dominated by ferns, flowering plants, and conifers similar to modern monkey puzzle trees (Araucaria araucana). [Extracted from the article]
