      The article examines the adoption of urban administrative and infrastructure roles within the context of smart cities. The historical relationship between industry, community, and urban planning is described, the alleged role of the COVID-19 pandemic in exposing latent problems with U.S. urban infrastructure is discussed, and the future of smart cities and urban planning is speculated upon.
