Deep in debt since the construction of its new theatre and unable to receive funding at necessary levels, Freedom Theatre, the nation's oldest and largest African-American theatre, has been forced to cancel its 2004-05 professional season, it was announced by Artistic Director Walter Dallas. New Paradise Laboratories' text-based Don Juan in Nirvana signals a significant departure for the award-winning movement-theatre troupe. Artistic Director Whit MacLaughlin's unique exploration of Molière's 17th-century satire was not entirely successful, but when it worked, it was a visual and theatrical wonder.
