Urbanization, together with industrial and agricultural development, has increased the rate of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) generated in aquatic ecosystems. This increasingly leads to eutrophication of water and the proliferation of cyanobacteria, which imbalance ecosystem dynamics. These cyanobacteria can become more harmful by producing cyanotoxins, that is, poisons harmful to public and environmental health. The aim of this article is to summarize studies published on toxic cyanobacteria and their toxins in Algeria and around the world. This review of the literature will facilitate researchers' understanding of the phenomena related to acute, chronic, and subchronic intoxications. The routes of intoxication, direct via water, and indirect via animals and plants, are recorded. Algerian cases showing such intoxication in humans or animals are also listed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
