    • Abstract:
Daniel Eberhard Baring (1690-1753), assistant librarian at the Royal Library of Hanover, published the Clavis diplomatica in 1737, a book that became a standard work in diplomatics in the 18th century. Baring continued Jean Mabillon's work in several respects and endeavoured to make it suitable for practical use. In this way he wanted to solve key diplomatic problems, establish a genuine historical auxiliary science and improve the quality of contemporary editions of documents. The main problem Baring identified in this context was the correct reading of abbreviations, which is why the „Diplomatic key" contains the first systematic reference work on their dissolution. In addition to numerous special studies, Clavis diplomatica also offers an extensive bibliography on diplomatics since the publication of Mabillons De re diplomatica in 1681. Baring's work was published in 1753 in a second, greatly expanded edition. The currently forgotten „Diplomatic key" offers an excellent, systematic approach to researching the early history of diplomacy (about 1680-1750). The book itself is also an important part of this history and deserves more attention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
