    • Abstract:
The article focuses on the Dutch-Indonesia confrontation over the territorial right of New Guinea and the U.S. position on the whole issue. On the eve of the NATO conference in Paris, the Dutch Government made a request for NATO for solidarity in dealing with the new outbreak of conflict between Indonesia and the Netherlands. It is found that the US is caught in a struggle between a European ally and an Asian-African nationalist movement. The immediate issue is the treatment of Dutch property and nationals in Indonesia. Behind this issue lies the rivalry of Indonesia and the Netherlands for sovereignty in Dutch New Guinea.
