    • Abstract:
The article discusses the choice of layman in choosing a paperback book. When the author agreed to write a monthly piece on the paperbacks for journal "The New Republic," it occurred to him that he was about to become the only book reviewer in America but many have joined till date. Assuming that educated layman actually exists in America and that the intellectual world he inhabits is indeed a "market place of general culture where serious books a great variety of subjects compete for his attention, by what criteria would he make his choice, he would clearly want to read those lesser known works of major authors that form a decent percentage of paperbacks library.
