      The integration of Spain into NATO is one of the most controversial episodes in its recent democratic history. Through the following pages, a brief study will be shown about the period between the arrival of the Spanish Workers Socialist Party to the government in October 1982, and the referendum for the permanence of Spain in the Atlantic Alliance in 1986. The center of the study is PSOE and the evolution of the party regarding its position in foreign and security policy. The first part of the process was influenced by the joining of Spain to the European Economic Community. The second part of the study reflects some of the internal atmosphere of great tension in PSOE regarding NATO until the socialist referendum celebration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

      La integración de España en la Organización del Tratado del Atlántico Norte es uno de los episodios más controvertidos de la historia democrática reciente. A través de las siguientes páginas comenzará un breve estudio del periodo comprendido desde la llegada del Partido Socialista Obrero Español al gobierno en octubre de 1982 hasta la celebración del referéndum por la permanencia de España en la Alianza Atlántica en 1986. El centro del estudio es el PSOE y la evolución del partido respecto a su posición en política exterior y de seguridad. En la primera parte del proceso influyó el proceso de adhesión de España a la Comunidad Económica Europea. En la segunda parte del artículo queda reflejada parte de las tensiones internas en el PSOE respecto a la OTAN hasta la celebración del referéndum socialista. Durante el periodo tratado Felipe González y el gobierno socialista no perdieron la iniciativa política que ayudó a obtener un resultado favorable en el giro atlantista dentro del PSOE.
