- Abstract: The author uses insights from the history of knowledge and political history to consider the Progressive Era novel "The Jungle," by Upton Sinclair. Topics considered include the novel's accounts of slaughterhouses, its influence on the politics of food laws, the theory of speech acts forwarded by Jürgen Habermas, and food purity and adulteration.
