The article focuses on the political conditions in the U.S. It is rather odd that whenever the Republican party gets into debt the poor officeholders, who constitute only one-seventieth part of the party, should be called on to pay it. There are four parties in the political arena in California, the Republicans and Democrats proper, the Workingmen, and the Honorable Bilks. Nobody knows exactly what the Workingmen, led by Kearney, seek, beyond the possession of the government and an opportunity of working the new Constitution in their own way, for the confusion of capitalists and rich men generally.
