- Abstract:
In this study the nature and essence of the counsellor-principal relationship was ascertained, using a descriptive phenomenological design. Semi-structured interviews were conducted separately with eight principals and nine guidance counsellors. Five themes were extracted from the interviews: working alliance, hands-on management, collaborative leadership, impediments to the alliance, and personal qualities. The implications of the relationship on improving work effectiveness, and attainment of institutional objectives are discussed. Recommendations include the use of the themes as a guide in programme development and policymaking, replication and validation of the themes in other settings, the development of training modules for principals, and capability-building seminars for counsellors.
