    • Abstract:
This article provides information on the American Public Health Association 132nd Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington D.C. in November 2004. The theme Public Health and the Environment reflects the profound impact environmental factors have on the health of the public. Issues involving the quality of the air that people breathe, the water they drink and the food they eat and how they can protect and preserve the environment, will be examined. The environment has long been one of the association's priority areas. Many disease outbreaks are related to environmental health issues and contribute to growing disparities in health. The meeting will focus attention on the role of public health in addressing environmental issues, sustaining healthy environments and enhancing research, public awareness, prevention and treatment of disease caused or exacerbated by environmental factors. The meeting will address the most promising intervention strategies, research gaps, and the state of the science as it relates to environmental determinants of health and will focus attention on the role of public health in addressing these factors. In addition, the meeting will unite the public health community and afford professionals and practitioners the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and exchange information on best practices, latest research and new trends in public health.
