    • Abstract:
The visit to the Salons explains why, lately, French writers on art in search of a sensation have been compelled to cross the channel and discover Pre-Raphaelitism. To go direct from the Royal Academy and the New Gallery to the Salons is to be struck with the immense amount of ability and energy everywhere displayed in the French shows. Among Salon exhibitors, however, genius for industry and technical ability go hand in hand. It is all the more irritating, therefore, to find the results obtained so tinctured with commonplace, so wholly without distinction.
