Photographer Françoise Gervais says: "After waiting for days to see the iconic ice bear, magic finally happened when this inquisitive polar bear visited our winter camp to have a closer look at us. Vast underwater forests of giant kelp are a vital part of British Columbia's marine ecosystems, providing food and habitat for many species. Many fern species grow locally in Vancouver and British Columbia's Lower Mainland, but if you're thinking of foraging for fiddleheads this spring, do your research first: not every type of fern has edible shoots, and some are even toxic.
