      DURING THE SUMMER of 1818, aboard the Isabella, British captain John Ross stared over the cold waters of the Arctic Archipelago. On a map in Ross's expedition account, A Voyage of Discovery, Croker's Mountains are drawn as if seen from above, swelling like thunderheads, blocking off any passage to the west. Perhaps Ross's poor eyesight was to blame for Croker's Mountains, or else he'd confused a rolling fog with a swell of peaks. As Moore's team got closer, the mountain hovered far above, cloud-white, its apex invisible from below. [Extracted from the article]
