RECENT DISCOVERIES OF PREHISTORIC SITES IN NENGGIRI BASIN. (English)
    • Abstract:
The Nenggiri River Basin, located in Hulu Kelantan, had many cultural heritage sites, among which associated with prehistoric and proto-historic cultures. These sites are very significant in historical developments in the state of Kelantan, especially the famous sites such as the Gua Cha and Gua Chawas which highlight the artifacts that make up the historical chronology of Kelantan's early history. The proposed hydro-electric dam project that will built in Hulu Kelantan will cause some of archaeological sites to be undated. As a result, a systematic survey was conducted to record the data of existing sites as well as the new sites found along the Nenggiri River basin witch will affected by the construction of the hydro-electric dam. As a results from the survey, several new prehistoric sites have been found of which have high archeological potential. These sites are close to Pos Pulat while some are close to the proposed Main Dam. Among the new sites found were Gua Cahaya, Gua Kechil (Batu Tambah), Gua Lubang Kelewar (Batu Tambah), Gua Perdang, Gua Rahmat and also Gua Kemiri located on Mount Kemiri near Main Dam. Based on ground observation, Gua Lubang Kelawar, Gua Kecil, Gua Kemiri, Gua Perdang, dan Gua Keledung have a high archaeological potential. Among the surface artefacts found were stone tools, pottery shards and food remains like fresh water snails. Interesting finding was in Gua Kelew, Gua Kecil (Batu Tambah) and Gua Lubang Kelawar (Batu Tambah), where a lots of cave paintings was found. The paintings were made of charcoal and those three caves have more paintings than other caves documented before. Other caves such as Gua Rahmat, Gua Air, Gua Janggut have low archaeological potential. Surveys have shown that there are still many potential sites for archeological studies in the Nenggiri River Basin and intensive studies are being carried out to gather all information for the benefit of the archaeological heritage of the country.
