      The article comments on political conditions in various countries. More than the conquest of a zone, it is the destruction and capture of one of the key forts of Verdun by the Crown Prince's battalions that has been accepted as the outstanding result of a week's fighting. On the face of things this would be the beginning of the end of Verdun itself. Germany's heavy artillery was apparently repeating the story of the Belgian fortresses, of Maubeuge, of Kovno and Novogeorgievsk. The British Cabinet now has a Blockade Minister. The new position is filled by Lord Robert Cecil, who has been, since the formation of the Coalition Government, Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
